Big news at Reel! 🚀 Yesterday we announced an exciting new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) where 25 companies (!!) have come together to enable the financing and construction of a 14 MW solar park in Mesballe which will be developed by Energicenter Nord! This is a powerful example of how Reel is transforming the PPA market, opening it up to new segments and empowering companies of all sizes to take part in the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure. 6 takes why batteries are key in an FBMC-market. The Nordic region successfully implemented Flow-Based Market Coupling (FBMC) on October 29. The first trading day for delivery was October 30. This transition aims to enhance grid efficiency, improve renewable energy integration, and harmonize electricity prices across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. By considering actual physical power flows and grid constraints, FBMC shall optimize our cross-border electricity trading, and subsequently facilitating a more resilient and interconnected Nordic power market. I believe batteries are crucial in an FBMC market because they provide the flexibility and responsiveness needed to manage the dynamic nature of electricity flows in a highly interconnected system. 1. Enhanced Grid Flexibility FBMC optimizes cross-border electricity trading by better reflecting physical grid constraints. However, these constraints also lead to price differences and bottlenecks, especially during high-demand or low-generation periods. Batteries alleviate these issues by storing surplus energy during low-demand periods and dispatching it when demand or prices are high. 2. Stabilizing Price Volatility FBMC aims to improve price convergence across regions, but during periods of high demand or variable renewable generation, localized price spikes still occur. Batteries provide a fast-responding solution to inject or withdraw power, smoothing out price fluctuations. 3. Balancing Renewable Integration As we all know, increased reliance on intermittent renewables like wind and solar creates variability in supply. Batteries act as a buffer, storing excess energy during periods of high generation and releasing it during shortages. This aligns well with FBMC, which seeks to optimize renewable energy use across borders. 4. Supporting Congestion Management FBMC better allocates transmission capacity by considering grid constraints, but this also highlights areas of congestion. Batteries deployed in strategic locations can reduce congestion by locally balancing supply and demand, reducing reliance on cross-border transfers. 5. Market Arbitrage Opportunities In an FBMC market, we know that price differences between regions are influenced by grid constraints and transmission capacity. Batteries can capitalize on these differences, charging when prices are low in one region and discharging when prices are high in another, enhancing profitability while supporting grid balance. 6. Faster Response to Imbalances Batteries provide near-instantaneous response compared to traditional power sources, making them ideal for ancillary services like frequency regulation and imbalance correction in an FBMC-driven market, where efficient cross-border power flows depend on a precise supply-demand balance. Norwegian startup secures funding from ENOVA for pilot project on sustainable concrete monitoring Birdsview, a Norway-based startup, has secured €711K (NOK 8.5 million) in funding from Enova to propel its innovative pilot project aimed at advancing concrete sustainability. Birdsview’s technology, initially developed for scanning wood, will now focus on analyzing concrete structures, providing a more accurate and cost-effective method to assess and extend the lifespan of buildings. By combining radar and sensors with smart algorithms, Birdsview plans to evaluate 100,000 m² of buildings and achieve a 65% reuse rate, helping reduce global CO2 emissions. Connecting with #powerwoman Tea Törmänen, a sensible and down-to-earth #conservationist, #biologist, and member of the Finish Greens was enlightening. Amazing to learn how the Finnish Greens have boldly integrated #nuclearenergy into their environmental vision, marking them as the first Green Party globally to embrace nuclear two years ago. Tea pointed out their pragmatic, technology-neutral approach to reducing #carbon emissions, which seems to be paying dividends: with the recent activation of their newest reactor, Olkiluoto 3, Finland's electricity grid is now nearly 95% carbon-free, showcasing the tangible results of their forward-thinking policies. She also shared insights from the latest public opinion polls in #Finland, revealing a robust majority in favour of nuclear power across the country. Latvian State Forests adopts CollectiveCrunch bark beetle solution   We are excited to announce that Latvian State Forests are adopting CollectiveCrunch’s early-stage bark beetle detection solution. CollectiveCrunch has recently adopted its solutions to address the Baltic forestry context, with very good results. A big thank-you to the technical team for their effort! Bark beetle outbreaks have become a devastating problem in Central Europe and increasingly in the Nordics. Driven by climate change, drier summers and warmer winters, outbreaks in recent years have been exponentially larger than historical norms. Understanding the risks and responding to outbreaks as early as possible can protect forests and maintain forest values. Moreover, understanding the dynamics of risks, forest owners and managers can adjust their strategic planning to regenerate high-risk areas. Says Jānis Dzelzītis of LVM: “CollectiveCrunch’s solution will help us to address the increasing threat from bark beetles and will enable us to respond more quickly to outbreaks. It is essential in the Baltics to address this growing problem, and to avoid the devastating forest losses that have been experienced across Central Europe.” Jarkko Lipponen added: “We are excited to be working with LVM on a better response to the bark beetle challenge. Last week, we had in Kuopio the first public event in Finland focusing on the use of small modular reactor (SMR) plants for district heating in cities. Local energy companies need continuously to explore future solutions for their district heating energy systems. One option to consider by the early 2030´s is the use of SMRs, which means that political decisions and zoning processes should start as early as next year. It is also crucial to inform and engage everyone in these participatory processes. This event was a collaborative effort between VTT researchers, local municipalities, the local energy company, and the vendor Steady Energy. Also Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland (STUK) was present. Our work is part of the TANDEM project, where we develop and test different methods for citizen engagement related to SMRs. About 60-70 people attended, constructive discussions were held, and most participants evaluated the event as useful. Key Learnings: Collaborative Design: Working closely with local municipalities and energy companies is crucial—they understand their residents and what approaches are effective. Neutral Organizers: Having the city as a neutral stakeholder is beneficial for organizing such events. Transparency: Providing fact-based information and addressing difficult topics (costs, safety, nuclear waste) openly is essential. Expert Insights: Short presentations by experts on various topics (energy company motives, reactor details, nuclear waste management, safety oversight, and decision-making participation) are highly valuable. Informal Interaction: Creating informal settings for questions and comments, such as long coffee breaks with expert stands, encourages open dialogue. Continuous Improvement: Collect feedback, learn from it, and strive to improve for future events. Openness to Criticism: Always remain open to criticism, vigilant, and humble. Avoid arrogance to foster trust and constructive dialogue. In TANDEM-project me and Nina Wessberg continue co-creating and testing citizen workshop concepts in different focus groups in Finland and in Italy, Czechs and Brussels.
